India won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, defeating New Zealand by four wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
India achieved their aim of 252 runs with one over to spare. Rohit Sharma, the captain, was instrumental in leading his side to victory, hitting 76 runs in the process.
Rohit Sharma was selected Player of the Match after scoring 76 runs, and Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand was crowned Player of the Tournament after scoring 263 runs and taking three wickets.
India got off to a good start with skipper Rohit Sharma and opener Shubman Gill putting up a 105-run partnership. Sharma, who had battled throughout the competition, regained his form and hit a crucial half-century.
However, New Zealand struck first, with Mitchell Santner dismissing Gill for 31 off 50 balls and Glenn Phillips catching him.
The disappointment worsened when Virat Kohli, who had been in excellent form throughout the competition, was removed for one run. Kohli fell victim to Michael Bracewell’s bowling, leaving India at 107 for 2, putting pressure on the middle order.
Sharma, who was aiming for a big score, hit 76 runs, including three sixes. However, he was removed in an unexpected manner—caught out of his crease by Ravindra Jadeja’s ball, with Tom Latham performing the honors behind the stumps, leaving India on 122 for 3.
At this time, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel anchored the ship with a critical 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket, keeping India on course. Iyer was on his way to a well-deserved half-century when Santner struck again, removing him for 48 off 62 balls, despite the fact that he was dropped on 46.
With India on 183 for 4, the match was in a delicate balance. Bracewell boosted New Zealand’s chances by removing Axar Patel, who had scored 29 runs.
With five wickets down, Lokesh Rahul and Hardik Pandya came to the rescue by forging a match-winning combination.
The two delivered critical blows as their cooperation enabled India cross the finish line and record a remarkable triumph, earning the Champions Trophy for the third time in the country’s history.
Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first in the Champions Trophy final in Dubai. However, they had an early setback as fast bowler Matt Henry was ruled out owing to a shoulder injury.
India returned unchanged from their semi-final triumph over Australia, relying on a four-pronged spin assault to keep winning. The sluggish pitch favored India’s slow bowlers, with Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav both getting two wickets in the 50-over match.
Due to political difficulties and a refusal to travel Pakistan, India played all of its matches in Dubai and were undefeated, winning all four of them.
