WASHINGTON (Reuters) — According to a person familiar with the situation, the Trump administration is considering prohibiting Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek from being used on US government equipment because to national security concerns.

US officials are concerned about DeepSeek’s management of user data, which the business claims to store on servers in China, according to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story first.

According to the Journal, administration officials are also considering banning the chatbot from app stores and limiting how US-based cloud service providers may provide DeepSeek’s AI models to their clients. These conversations are still in the early stages.

DeepSeek’s low-cost AI models sparked a significant sell-off in global equities markets in January, as investors were concerned that its entrance might threaten current AI industry leaders.

A coalition of 21 state attorneys general urged Congress on Thursday to adopt legislation prohibiting the download and use of DeepSeek artificial intelligence software on government equipment.

The White House did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
