Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), met with imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan at Adiala Jail on Tuesday.
Barrister Gohar spoke to the media following the meeting, saying it was his first meeting with Khan since the terrorist assault on the Jaffar Express, which Khan denounced. He stated that Khan voiced his worry about the increasing number of terrorist attacks in Pakistan and emphasized the importance of working together to eradicate the terrorism threat. He stated that Khan supported the decision of the PTI’s political committee to boycott today’s civil-military huddle on terrorism.
Barrister Gohar reported Khan as claiming that the PTI represents four provinces and has the backing of 70% of Pakistanis. He stated that if Pakistan’s administration is sincere about combating terrorism, Imran Khan must be released. He further said that Khan was refused regular meetings with his family and party officials.
In a related event, PTI leader Salman Akram Raja spoke briefly with the media following his meeting with the party founder. He described Imran Khan as claiming that he and his wife were being held in jail, which was unusual.He claimed Imran Khan underlined his refusal to surrender and his determination to resist Nazism. He stated that Khan was determined to fight for democracy and the supremacy of the law in Pakistan.
Barrister Ali Zafar, a PTI leader, stated that Imran Khan believes the battle on terrorism would continue and that this evil must be removed from Pakistan. He stated that the government cannot find a solution to the terrorist problem without including Imran Khan, who leads Pakistan’s largest political party. He stated that today’s discussion on national security is meaningless without Imran Khan’s presence.
He found it surprising that PTI leaders were not even permitted to see Imran Khan. He stated that the PTI does not accept any such security briefings.
