Police detained Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) chairwoman Sammi Deen Baloch from the courthouse again on Tuesday, just after a judicial magistrate ordered her and the other accused’s release.
A day earlier, Karachi police nabbed Sammi and many others for breaking Section 144, using force to disperse their rally as the BYC continued to protest its leadership’s detention in Balochistan.
However, as soon as she was released, police sought to re-arrest her, prompting pushback from attorneys in the courtroom. Shortly after, they removed the Baloch leader from the courtroom and imprisoned her for 30 days under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).
According to the Sindh Home Department, the decision was based on the Inspector General (IG) Sindh’s recommendation, which cited security concerns.
Officials accused Sammi, along with Abdul Wahab Baloch, Raza Ali, and others, of instigating road blockades and sit-ins that might disturb peace and order in the city.
The agency also noted that the arrested persons’ presence in public areas presented a threat to peace and stability.
According to Sammi’s attorney, Jibran Nasir, police sought to hold her under the MPO ordinance. “The learned judicial magistrate discharged all five accused in the FIR registered yesterday,” Jibran stated in a post on X.
“As soon as the accused were discharged and ordered freed, the cops began waving the MPO order. While Sammi surrendered and willingly submitted her arrest, the locations of four others, Lala Wahab, Raziq, Sultan, and Shahdad, remain unknown,” he added.
It should be mentioned that the BYC had planned a demonstration at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) against the “illegal detention” of its key leaders, including Dr. Mahrang Baloch.
Mahrang and 16 other activists were apprehended on Saturday from their protest camp in Quetta, a day after they accused police of beating up three of their protestors to death during an anti-riot action.
