ISLAMABAD: Three Supreme Court judges took oath as judges of the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) in Islamabad on Friday, after President Asif Ali Zardari nominated the first six judges to the newly formed court.
Justice Amin Uddin Khan, Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court, gave the oath to Justices Aamer Farooq, Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, and Ali Baqar Najafi.
The event was attended by justices from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan.
Justices Arbab Muhammad Tahir, Khadim Hussain Soomro, Muhammad Azam Khan, Muhammad Asif, and Inaam Ameen Minhas were among the IHC justices in attendance.
However, five IHC justices — Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz — did not attend the swearing-in event.
The Ministry of Law and Human Rights released an official announcement announcing the appointment of six judges to the FCC.
According to the announcement, President Zardari announced the selections based on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s suggestion and in conjunction with FCC Chief Justice Amin Uddin Khan.
The Supreme Court Justices Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Aamer Farooq, and Ali Baqar Najafi have been appointed, as have Justice Muhammad Karim Khan Agha of the Sindh High Court and Chief Justice Rozi Khan Barrech of the Balochistan High Court.
Earlier, The Post reported that Justice Amin Uddin Khan was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of Pakistan’s Federal Constitutional Court on Friday.
Justice Amin was appointed to a three-year term under the newly ratified 27th Constitutional Amendment, which formed the new judicial institution.
President Asif Ali Zardari gave the oath during an event at Islamabad’s Aiwan-e-Sadr. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, were all present.
