ISLAMABAD: On Saturday, a special court sentenced PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in jail in the Toshakhana-2 case.
The lawsuit concerns the acquisition of an expensive Bulgari jewelry set given to Imran by the Saudi crown prince during an official visit in May 2021 at a bargain price. During the hearings, the prosecution said that the PTI founder kept the jewellery set, which was worth at over Rs80 million, after paying only Rs2.9 million.
Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand handed the decision at a hearing in Rawalpindi’s Adiala prison, where Imran is jailed.
Imran was sentenced to 17 years in prison, including 10 years rigorous imprisonment under sections 34 (common intention) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Pakistan Penal Code and seven years under Section 5(2) (criminal misconduct by public servants) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Bushra Bibi was sentenced to 17 years in jail under the same conditions.
Both were fined Rs16.4 million. According to the legislation, failing to pay the fines would result in further jail term.
According to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Imran’s jail time in the case would begin when his sentence in the £190 million corruption case is completed.
The court judgment, a copy of which is available with Dawn, stated, “This court, while delivering sentences, has considered Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi’s age as well as the fact that Bushra Imran Khan is female. In light of both of these circumstances, a liberal approach has been used in assigning reduced penalty.”
It further said that “hereby given to the convicts” the advantage of Section 382-B (time of detention to be considered in awarding sentence of imprisonment) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
