Former New Zealand great Brendon McCullum said on Friday that accepting the position of reviving England’s cricket fortunes brought him “bittersweet” emotions.

The 40-year-old, who was known for his “smash or crash” mentality during his 101-Test career, which ended only six years ago, was selected as the next head coach of an England cricket team that has only won one of its last 17 Tests on Thursday.

“I’m really delighted, but there’s some bittersweet stuff in terms of having to turn the page on a few of things,” McCullum told SENZ radio from India, where he is presently coaching the Kolkata Knight Riders of the Indian Premier League.
