KABUL (AFP) – Graham Thorpe, a former England batsman, has been named Afghanistan’s new head coach.

The 52-year-old replaces Lance Klusener, an ex-South African all-rounder who left by mutual consent in November.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed Thorpe’s nomination on Tuesday.

According to an ACB announcement, “Former English middle-order batsman Thorpe has been appointed as the new head coach of our national men’s cricket team.”

Thorpe was England’s batting coach until he was sacked after the team lost the Ashes 4-0 in Australia.

Thorpe, a superb left-handed batsman, batted for England in 100 Test matches between 1987 and 2002, accumulating 6744 runs at 44.66 with 16 hundreds.
