MELBOURNE – Rafael Nadal of Spain overcame Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in a gripping Australian Open final today at Rod Laver Arena by a score of 2-6 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-4 7-5.
After falling behind in the first two sets, Nadal staged an incredible return to win the title. Medvedev, 25, took command before Nadal displayed all of his legendary guts and fighting spirit to achieve an amazing victory.
With this championship, Nadal has now eclipsed Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer for the record of most Grand Slam titles won, with 21.
The left-handed tennis player has now won two Australian Open titles, the second after a 13-year absence.
Nadal, who had previously lost four Australian Open finals, described this triumph as “one of the most dramatic wins in his career.”
“It is without a doubt one of the most emotional victories of my career,” he remarked.
Nadal also expressed gratitude to his fans and support personnel, and expressed optimism that he would continue to improve in the same manner.
