Sri Lanka’s cricket board named former England head coach Chris Silverwood to oversee the country’s national squad on Saturday, succeeding stand-in Rumesh Ratnayake.
Sri Lanka Cricket announced in a statement that the 47-year-first old’s duty would be to prepare his new team for the forthcoming trip of Bangladesh.
“He is an accomplished coach, and based on our discussions…it is apparent he possesses the requisite skills we are seeking for to lead the squad forward,” SLC Chief Ashley de Silva said.
Silverwood was England’s head coach from late 2019 until early 2022, resigning down following a catastrophic Ashes campaign in which his team was defeated 4-0.
When England won the 2019 ICC World Cup, he was the bowling coach.
Ratnayake, a former Test player, was selected temporary coach in January, ahead of visits to Zimbabwe and Australia.
Mickey Arthur, Sri Lanka’s previous head coach, resigned in December.
