LONDON: Former England captains Michael Vaughan and Michael Atherton have backed flamboyant all-rounder Ben Stokes to become the new England Test captain.

Stokes, who previously stated that if his pal Joe Root is fired, he will decline the invitation to skipper the team. However, in the case of Root, retiring from the post on his own may result in the former assuming the role on the spot.

Vaughan, who led England to an Ashes victory in 51 Tests, described Stokes as a “obvious option.”

“I don’t see anyone else who could take the position and be assured a spot in the team,” Vaughan said of Stokes.
