CHITTAGONG, Thailand (AFP) – As Pakistan cruised to an eight-wicket win against Bangladesh in the first Test in Chittagong on Tuesday, Abid Ali came just short of back-to-back centuries.

Alis’ 151-run combination with fellow opener Abdullah Shafique helped brought play to a close before midday on the last day, outscoring their first-innings partnership by five runs.

The pair had already made 109 overnight and were on their way to 202.

Bangladesh’s first wicket came in the tenth over of the day, when Mehidy Hasan caught rookie Shafique lbw on 73 with a fuller delivery.

Shafique, who also made a fifty in the first innings, was out after eight fours and a six.

Ali, who scored 133 in Pakistan’s first innings, appeared to be on track to become the first Pakistani to score a Test century pair in six years, following Misbah-ul-accomplishment Haq’s against Australia in 2014.

With Pakistan down by 31 runs, Taijul Islam struck him in front of the middle stump with a straighter delivery.

“Our plan was to stay at the wicket and form a partnership. I’ve been performing well in domestic cricket. That’s what I brought into this game “Ali, the contest’s man of the match, stated.

He was greeted with a standing ovation as he left the crease, and he was also praised by Bangladeshi fielders on a superb 148-ball innings that included 12 boundaries.

Azhar Ali, 24 not out, took the game to over 58.3 following back-to-back boundaries from Mehidy, while skipper Babar Azam was unbeaten on 13.
“We returned well… and that’s what Test cricket is all about,” Babar remarked.

Taijul ended the game for the hosts with eight wickets, including 7-116 in the first innings.

“We lost in the first hour in both the first and second innings, but kudos to them, particularly Afridi and Hasan Ali. They bowled quite effectively “Mominul Haque, the captain of Bangladesh, stated.

The hosts scored 330 runs in the first innings and gained a 44-run advantage when Pakistan was bowled out.

Liton Das, Bangladesh’s wicketkeeper-batsman, scored 114 runs in the first innings and 59 runs in the second.

Pakistan’s Hasan Ali and Shaheen Afridi excelled with the ball, taking 5-51 and 5-32 in two innings, respectively.

The second Test will take held from December 4 to 8 at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.2021-11-30
